Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp
Charter fishing on Lake Huron ranks among the highlights of summer vacation for 15-year-old Troy Bohling of Wayne County, along with sailing, archery, swimming, and the chance to use some high-tech scientific equipment.
The activities were all part of this year’s 4-H Great Lakes and Natural Resources Camp, supported in part by Michigan Sea Grant. Bohling was one of 74 young people from 28 Michigan counties who attended the 2007 camp in late July. The weeklong camp is held annually at Camp Chickagami on Lake Esau near the shores of northern Lake Huron in Presque Isle, Michigan.
Campers learn from natural resource professionals who lead sessions in Great Lakes ecology, charter fishing and fisheries, coastal processes, wildlife and forestry, wetlands, and watersheds.
This pre-college program helps teens increase their awareness, appreciation and understanding of natural resources ecology and management, and develop leadership skills.
