Awards Recognize Michigan Sea Grant Products

Michigan Sea Grant received three awards recently for two of its educational products – an exhibit on lake sturgeon, and its Fins, Tails and Scales poster.

The awards were announced in April 2007 by the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE), and the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC).

Lake Sturgeon Exhibit
Sea Grant’s educational display featuring a life-size model of a lake sturgeon won a 2007 Gold Award from the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE).

The entry won the top award in the Exhibits category, receiving high marks for creativity, layout and design, production quality, idea effectiveness, and typography. Among the judge’s comments: “It’s clean, professional, and very educational.”

The exhibit is part of the Belle Isle/Detroit River Sturgeon Habitat Restoration, Monitoring and Education Project led by Michigan Sea Grant assistant director Jennifer Read. Now on display at Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s Smith Terminal, the display highlights the history and unique biology of lake sturgeon, a threatened species in Michigan.

Fins, Tails, and Scales: Learning About Great Lakes Fishes
Michigan Sea Grant’s poster, Fins, Tails, and Scales – Learning About Great Lakes Fishes, won a bronze award from the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE). Judge’s comments noted the poster’s “classic design,” and overall attractiveness.

The poster also received a blue pencil award from the National Association of Government Communicators. Fins, Tails and Scales features 21 fish illustrations and highlights some of the distinctive traits that separate Great Lakes fish families.
