Hard Work is Key to Competing in Great Lakes Bowl

Preparing for the annual Great Lakes Bowl begins well in advance of the actual competition for students at Dexter High School in Southeast Michigan.

“We read all summer,” says team coach Cheryl Wells. “We use the Internet, resource books, textbooks, posters, charts, samples, pamphlets, videos, and DVDs. The questions get more technical each year. So we need to get smart and stay smart.”

So far, the hard work has paid off. Dexter High School won the Great Lakes Bowl in 1995, 1998, and again in 1996 and 1997. Last year’s winning team from Dexter advanced to the national finals in Stonybrook, New York. “We had a great trip and came in 7th place overall,” says Wells.

Wells will coach two teams in the upcoming Great Lakes Bowl, to be held Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The Great Lakes Bowl is a quiz-bowl style competition for high school students that tests students’ knowledge of math and science skills as applied to the oceans and Great Lakes. Competing teams consist of five students and a coach. Rapid-fire questions cover everything from biology and chemistry, to geology, physics, technology, history, and economics.

The Great Lakes Bowl is a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). NOSB is a nationwide event with 25 participating regions. In addition to regional and national competitions, the NOSB program offers student scholarships, internships, and teacher professional development opportunities.

Winners of the 2008 Great Lakes Bowl will receive an all-expense paid trip to the NOSB national competition to be held April 25-27, 2008 in Seward, Alaska.
