University of Michigan Student Receives 2006 Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

University of Michigan graduate student Lauren Ris has been selected to receive a Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship upon the recommendation of Michigan Sea Grant.

Knauss Fellowships are sponsored by the National Sea Grant College Program. The competitive fellowships allow outstanding students to work on Great Lakes and marine policy issues in Washington, D.C. for one year.

Ris received a Master of Science degree in natural resource policy from the University of Michigan in April 2005. While at UM, she assisted in teaching a graduate level course in natural resource policy and administration with UM Professor Steven Yaffee. Ris also served as a student researcher in the Ecosystem Management Initiative.

In 2004, Ris was awarded a Doris Duke Conservation Fellowship. During the internship, she worked for the Shared Strategy for Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington and helped develop a region wide recovery plan for Chinook salmon.

Ris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University in 2002. She has held positions at the National Wildlife Federation, University of Idaho Cooperative Fisheries Unit, and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. In addition, she spent two semesters studying abroad in Ecuador and in Scotland.

During her time in Washington, D.C., Ris will work for the US Fish and Wildlife Service. She joins Knauss fellows from around the nation who will begin their terms on February 1, 2006.
