Great Lakes Bowl Set for February

The 2006 Great Lakes Bowl, the 9th annual regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), will take place in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006 at the Dana Building on the University of Michigan campus.

The Great Lakes Bowl is an academic "quiz bowl" competition among high school teams designed to promote literacy in science and mathematics through improved understanding of the world's oceans and Great Lakes.

In this day-long event, teams of four students compete in rapid-fire question and answer matches. Questions test students’ math and science skills related to ocean and Great Lakes biology, chemistry, geology, physics, technology, history and economics.

The Great Lakes Bowl is one of more than 20 regional events held around the country. Winners of the regional competitions will receive an expense paid trip to the final competition in Monterey, California in May 2006.

The Great Lakes Bowl is sponsored by the NOAA-Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) and the University of Michigan Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystem Research (CILER) with support from local partners including Michigan Sea Grant.

Information is available online to help students and teachers prepare for the competition. See: www.nosb.org
