Knauss Fellowships Offer Valuable Opportunity for Grad Students

If you’re a graduate student interested in ocean, coastal or Great Lakes resource policy, you could be a candidate for a Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship.

The one-year paid fellowships provide a valuable opportunity for selected graduate students nationwide to work side-by-side with legislators on natural resource policy issues. Each year, the Knauss program matches about 30 graduate students with hosts in the legislative or executive branches, or other institutions located in Washington, D.C.

Any student who is in a graduate or professional program in a marine or aquatic-related field at a U.S. accredited institution of higher education as of April 1st 2005 may apply for the 2006 term.

Interested students from Michigan should contact Dr. Jennifer Read at jenread@umich.edu or (734) 936-3622 for application details and deadlines.

Students outside Michigan should contact the Sea Grant program in their home state or contact: Nikola Garber at nikola.garber@noaa.gov or (301) 713-2431 ext. 124.

The Coastal Management Fellowship was established in 1996 to provide on-the-job education and training opportunities in coastal resource management and policy for postgraduate students and to provide project assistance to state coastal zone management programs.

The program matches postgraduate students with state coastal zone programs to work on projects proposed by the state and selected by the fellowship sponsor, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center. This two-year opportunity offers a competitive salary, medical benefits, and travel and relocation expense reimbursement.

Application deadline is Monday, January 31, 2005.
