Preparations Underway for Great Lakes Bowl

2003 Great Lakes Bowl |
Like any bowl game, the action is fast paced. Competitors in the Great Lakes Bowl have to think quickly, and preparation is key. Players know that success is measured not in terms of touchdowns—but knowledge of the oceans and Great Lakes.
More than 60 students from around Michigan will soon put their knowledge to the test. The Great Lakes Bowl, the 8th annual regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB), will take place in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005 at the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and Environment.
”More than 10 schools have currently registered for this year’s event, and many are sending more than one team,” says Laura Florence, coordinator of the Great Lakes Bowl. “With several returning students and coaches, we’re looking forward to an exciting competition.”
The NOSB is an academic "quiz bowl" competition among high school teams designed to promote literacy in science and mathematics through improved understanding of the world's oceans and Great Lakes. Teams of four students compete in rapid-fire question and answer matches during the day-long competition.
The Great Lakes Bowl is one of 24 regional events held across the country. Winners of the regional competitions receive all-expense paid trips to the national competition to be held in Biloxi, Mississippi in April 2005.
The Great Lakes Bowl is coordinated by the NOAA-Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory and the University of Michigan’s Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research, with support from Michigan Sea Grant.
