Rip Currents and Water Safety
Michigan Sea Grant and its partners work to broaden public awareness of rip currents in the Great Lakes. Sea Grant Extension Educator Ron Kinnunen assists local partners on the Mackinac County Water Safety Review Team. The team maintains water safety equipment on northern Lake Michigan beaches and works with the National Weather Service in Marquette to provide rip current forecasts. A Water Safety Conference focusing on rip currents, channeling, and river currents is tentatively scheduled for May 2008 in St. Ignace. See: Details

Ensuring Virus-free Bait
Fishing is a favorite Michigan pastime that keeps baitfish dealers busy year round. Many dealers are taking extra steps to make sure the bait they sell is certified VHS-free. VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia) is a viral disease affecting more than 40 species of marine and freshwater fish in North America. Sea Grant extension educator Ron Kinnunen works with baitfish dealers to incorporate the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) process into their operations to prevent the spread of VHS.
