Ensuring Virus-free Bait
Fishing is a favorite Michigan pastime that keeps baitfish dealers busy year round. Many dealers are taking extra steps to make sure the bait they sell is certified VHS-free. VHS (Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia) is a viral disease affecting more than 40 species of marine and freshwater fish in North America. Sea Grant extension educator Ron Kinnunen works with baitfish dealers to incorporate the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) process into their operations to prevent the spread of VHS.
