Great Lakes Water Levels on the Agenda
One of three public meetings on Great Lakes water levels has been scheduled in Muskegon on Saturday, May 3, 2008. Experts from the International Upper Great Lakes Study will present the latest scientific findings and provide current information about water levels. They will also briefly outline the structure and purpose of the Study and review a history of water level regulation in the Great Lakes. The meeting will take place from 10 am to 12 pm at the Lake Michigan Center, Robert B. Annis Water Resources Institute, 740 West Shoreline Drive in Muskegon. See Details
Sturgeon Research and Restoration in West Michigan
The lake sturgeon is an important component of the region’s Great Lakes and riverine ecosystems and Michigan’s collective fisheries heritage. Sea Grant
hosted a public meeting on March 29, 2008 in Holland, Michigan to increase knowledge and understanding of sturgeon restoration and management, and highlight opportunities for involvement. See: Details
Grand Haven Regional Fishery Workshop
Michigan Sea Grant Extension hosted a regional fishery workshop in Grand Haven, Michigan on Saturday, March 1, 2008. The focus of the workshop will be on Lake Michigan fisheries. Topics included the current status of Chinook salmon and forage fish, an update on angler catch rates and effort, lake water levels and currents, the impacts of invasive species on the food web and fisheries, and new developments in management activities for the coming year. Stormwater Management in Spring Lake Township and Village
In collaboration with local partners, Sea Grant-funded researchers are addressing the issue of stormwater management in Spring Lake Township and the Village of Spring Lake. These fast growing communities are located along the shores of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Grand River. The project will investigate an integrated approach to reducing nonpoint source pollution and mitigating its impacts on Lake Michigan. Read more about the project in the current issue of upwellings.
