Habitat: Wooded swamps, rivers and ponds.

  • One of the most colorful ducks in the Great Lakes region and North America. Male wood ducks have a distinctive face pattern with white outlines and a long head crest. Females are brownish-gray with a head crest and white, teardrop shaped eye ring.
  • Often seen near small ponds and rivers with abundant trees. Wood ducks nest in tree cavities or bird boxes 5-30 feet above the ground or water.
  • When startled, wood ducks give a high-pitched whistle (ooEEK ooEEK) as they dodge swiftly through the trees.
