Habitat: Lakeshores

  • This active sandpiper is often seen on beaches “chasing retreating waves” as it feeds on small, aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates
  • Its appearance is rust-colored in summer. In winter, coloring is pale gray with white underneath and a black notch on its shoulders.
  • Michigan provides key stopover habitat for sanderlings as they travel north to Arctic breeding grounds.
