Habitat:
Ponds, lakes, marshes.
These small brown diving birds are similar to Horned grebes but without white wing patches, a more chicken-like bill and puffy white rump.
The Pied-billed Grebe breeds in Michigan but is rarely seen in flight because it prefers to escape predators by diving and usually migrates at night.
Like other grebe chicks, the young leave the nest soon after hatching and spend the first few weeks on the backs of their parents.
