Habitat: Common in open country near large trees.
- Flickers are jay-sized woodpeckers with brown backs, speckled breast and a black breast crescent. Also called “yellow-shafted flickers” because of their striking, yellow tail feathers.
- The Northern Flicker appears to breed throughout Michigan and generally in greater numbers than other species of woodpeckers.
- Flickers do not forage in trees like most woodpeckers. Instead, flickers act more like robins and are often seen probing lawns for grubs and worms in urban and suburban areas.
