Habitat: Great Lakes, marshes, ponds, bays.

  • This diving duck is black and white with a dark head and blue bill. It has a finely barred pattern on its back.
  • Lesser scaup and Greater scaup look very similar. Lesser scaup has a more angled (less rounded) head shape, and is more common in the Great Lakes region.
  • Often seen in groups, scaups prefer the open water of the Great Lakes, as well as bays and harbors, where they can move from one feeding ground to another.
