Greater Scaup

Habitat: Great Lakes, rivers, ponds, bays.

  • This diving duck is black and white with a dark head and blue bill. It has a finely barred pattern on its back.
  • Greater scaup and Lesser Scaup look very similar. Greater Scaup head has a more rounded (less angular) shape, and is more green than purple, as with Lesser scaup.
  • A fairly common migrant to Michigan, these scaups depend on stopover sites to rest and refuel while going from wintering areas in the south to breeding grounds on the Canadian tundra.
