Habitat: Wooded lakes, ponds, rivers.

  • These graceful divers are often recognized from a distance by their head crest. Males have a greenish-black head; females have a rust-colored head.
  • In flight, mergansers fly with bill, head, body and tail in an even, horizontal line. They often follow the winding path of rivers and streams.
  • Males have a slender, whitish body, with a black back.
