Habitat: Open farmlands, fields, marshes, lakes

  • A true “swallow tail” marks this striking songbird whose breeding area includes all of Michigan.
  • Coloring is blue-black above, “cinnamon-buff” below with a darker throat patch.
  • Flight is direct and close to the ground. Swallow typically feed on flying insects.
