Habitat: Marshes, weedy lakes

  • Large, reclusive marsh bird. Grayish-brown body with dark stripe down the side of its neck. Often stands rigid with bill pointing upward.
  • Body length averages nearly two feet, with a wingspan of nearly four feet.
  • Feeds on fish, frogs and other aquatic life.
  • Voice is a strange “pumping” sound during breeding season.
