Great Lakes Water Levels on the Agenda
One of three public meetings on Great Lakes water levels has been scheduled in Port Huron on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Experts from the International Upper Great Lakes Study will present the latest scientific findings and provide current information about water levels. They will also briefly outline the structure and purpose of the Study and review a history of water level regulation in the Great Lakes. The meeting will take place from 7–9 pm at the Great Lakes Maritime Center. See Details
Migratory Birds: Giving Them a Lift
The western Lake Erie basin in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario is one of North America’s hotspots for migrating songbirds, shorebirds and waterfowl. Michigan Sea Grant, in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, and DTE Energy Foundation, co-hosted a one-day workshop, Migratory Birds: Giving Them a Lift, on March 20, 2008. The workshop provided practical advice on how public and private land managers can manage habitat for migratory birds in the western Lake Erie basin. See: Details
Michigan Trails Forum
Sea Grant Extension Educator Mary Bohling served on the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association Greenways, Blueways and Open Space Committee to assist with coordinating a Michigan Trails Forum held on January 23, 2008. The forum was at capacity with 120 people in attendance from a variety of trail organizations and government agencies throughout Michigan. Bohling presented information about MSU Extension involvement in trail related tourism, including efforts with greenways and water trails in southeast Michigan.
Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative
Greenways are open spaces including habitats and trails that link parks, nature reserves, cultural features or historic sites. Many coastal cities around Michigan are successfully incorporating greenways and riverwalks into waterfront planning. Michigan Sea Grant provides leadership and technical assistance to the Downriver Linked Greenways Initiative, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and other greenways projects in Southeast Michigan. Huron-Erie Corridor Initiative
Formed in 2006, the Huron-Erie Corridor Initiative is an international partnership to restore and improve the ecological function and resilience of the Huron-Erie ecosystem in Southeast Michigan, Ohio and Canada. See: Details
Great Lakes Education Program
This popular program introduces fourth-graders in Macomb and Wayne counties (Michigan) to the unique features of the Great Lakes through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on experience. See: Details
Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge
Numerous local partners including Michigan Sea Grant have been working together to further cooperative conservation and ecotourism efforts in the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. The refuge covers 48 miles of shoreline along the lower Detroit River and the western basin of Lake Erie. See: Details
