Fellowship Opportunities

Sea Grant offers several fellowships for graduate and undergraduate students who are looking for:

  • An opportunity to learn more about coastal, Great Lakes and marine issues
  • A fantastic career building and networking opportunity
  • A chance to apply academic training in ecology, natural resources, policy, or law to real world issues
  • An insider view into how environmental policies are developed
  • A paid fellowship that can ease the transition from school to working life

For Graduate Students

These are paid 1-2 year fellowships that are typically pursued the year following graduation. The fellowships recruit students with a strong interest in marine and Great Lakes issues from a wide range of backgrounds, including, science, policy and law. Applications are due in late January or February.

The Application Process

Fellowship applicants go through a two-stage selection process. Michigan Sea Grant reviews all applicants from Michigan and then recommends several candidates to be considered by the national program office. During the initial application process, students do not need to secure a letter of endorsement from the Michigan Sea Grant director, but they should submit all other required application materials by the deadline. For application instructions, see: Application Guide

Summer Opportunity for Graduate and Undergraduate Students

This paid 12 week summer fellowship provides students with an exciting opportunity to conduct research in the Great Lakes region under the mentorship of an individual scientist or professional. Students should apply directly to the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystem Research.
