IUGLS Announces Public Meetings in Bay City, Port Huron and Muskegon
Public advisors to a binational study of Great Lakes water levels announced today that three public meetings will be held in Michigan this spring. Unwanted Medicine: Michigan Workshop to Assist Communities, Pharmacies in Safe Disposal of Unused Medicine
Traces of prescription drugs and other medicines detected in drinking water are becoming a growing environmental and public safety concern nationwide. One recent study conducted by the Associated Press found small amounts of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen and acetaminophen in drinking water supplies of 24 major metropolitan areas. Great Lakes bird die-offs signal ecological changes
Widespread ecological change is occurring in the Great Lakes, driven by the synergistic impacts of introduced species. Tens of thousands of birds have perished from botulism poisoning around the Great Lakes in less than a decade. See: Science News Article

Dead zones have a negative impact on fishing industries
Dr. Don Scavia, Michigan Sea Grant Director, speaks with David Fair, host of WEMUs radio show Issues of the Environment about "Dead zones" in our Great Lakes. Scavia explains that dead zones are areas in lakes or oceans without oxygen and that support no plant or animal life. The U.S. Farm Bill may be renegotiated to better protect commercial and recreational fishing industries. Listen to interview
