Celebrating Restoration and Spawning
Michigan Sea Grant recently hosted an event to celebrate a project focused on restoring sturgeon spawning reefs in the St. Clair River.
The goal is to boost populations of lake sturgeon and other native fish by providing structures for spawning.
The rock reefs are designed to attract several native species that are considered threatened or endangered in Michigan, including lake sturgeon, mooneye, the northern madtom catfish and the river redhorse sucker. Walleye and lake whitefish should also benefit. Since the event, the project has also attracted the interest of many stakeholders and media outlets.
