MSG at Restoration Conference
The Healing Our Waters – Great Lakes Coalition will join together on the shores of the Detroit River to reunite, examine progress and develop new strategies to achieve Great Lakes restoration goals in 2012 and beyond. Michigan Sea Grant is presenting on Economic Impact Studies: Practical Tips & Examples, Friday, Oct. 14.

New NOAA Article About the National Clean Marina Initiative
Michigan Sea Grant, the Michigan Clean Marina Program and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science are featured in a new article about the national Clean Marina initiative, recently posted on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's website.
"Clean Marina operators recognize the importance of providing boaters with a positive experience, and boaters are increasingly aware of the connection between stewardship best practices, good water quality for swimming, as well as healthy fisheries and beaches."
"Sea Grant Extension is very active across the country in implementing and assisting with the Clean Marina Initiative. On a national level the efforts of Sea Grant with respect to the Clean Marina Program are very visible at national conferences such as the States Organization for Boating Access and the International Marina and Boatyard Conference."

Stopping the Spread of Carp
MSG Associate Director Bill Taylor recently published a paper calling for the complete separation of the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins. The paper was in response to the threat of invasive Asian carp. Taylor was also recently interviewed about the issue on the Greening of the Great Lakes radio show.

Surf's Up for Safety
The Great Lakes Sea Grant Network has received the 2011 Dairyland Surf Classic Award for work on rip current and water safety awareness. Seven Sea Grant programs in the Great Lakes Network, including Michigan, were given this year's award as a result of collective education efforts, material distribution and media outreach. Wild Caught and Close to Home: Selecting and Preparing Great Lakes Whitefish recently won first place in a National Association of Government Communicators awards competition. The cookbook celebrates the Great Lakes whitefish with recipes, cooking techniques and chef insights.

Michigan Boating Industries Association Recognizes Boating Safety
National Safe Boating Week, May 21 - 27, is a time to raise awareness to improve safety and reduce accidents on our Michigan waters. "Boating is a popular pastime in Michigan, and statistics show it is also very safe, as boating related accidents and fatalities remain flat or decrease annually," said John Ropp, MBIA president.

Fellows Selected
Two University of Michigan students nominated by Michigan Sea Grant have been selected as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Management Fellows.
- Liz Durfee was matched with the Michigan Coastal Management Program to develop metrics, tools, and plans to address competing uses in Michigan's working waterfronts.
- Zach Hecht-Leavitt was matched with the New York Department of State - Division of Coastal Resources to develop an offshore spatial plan for managing competing uses in a crowded offshore environment.

A recent analysis of jobs in the Great Lakes region by Michigan Sea Grant shows that the Lakes are key to our economy in many ways. New Website Provides Educators with Great Lakes Teaching Tools
A new online tool created by Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) Great Lakes and Ohio State University’s Sea Grant Program delivers resources to help educators from around the region better integrate Great Lakes science into their classrooms. Launched this past fall, the Great Lakes Literacy Principles website at www.greatlakesliteracy.net links teaching resources with each of the eight newly created Great Lakes Literacy Principles. Michigan Sea Grant Invites Pre-Proposals to Address Tough Coastal Issues
Michigan Sea Grant is currently inviting pre-proposals for research projects that address a range of coastal issues in Michigan. The program will award grants of up to $75,000 per year for projects of up to two years’ duration, beginning in February 2012. Researchers from any accredited university in the state of Michigan are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators. Projects teams are not limited to university researchers. See: Full release
