Addressing Testing Standards
According to 2005 results reported by the Michigan Department of Education, high school MEAP scores in science and social studies have declined. Project FLOW materials are designed to help Michigan educators address the need to improve MEAP scores by:

  • Standardizing key elements in each lesson (e.g., background, activity, and assessment) and ensuring that these elements clearly address the lesson objectives that are based on standards and benchmarks. For more information, see each lesson.
  • Providing meaningful assessment tools that include the following components: learning objectives, student performance and recommended points. For more information, see the Assessment Overview. For more information about the development of this curriculum content, see About Project FLOW.

Methods
Relevant sections from educational publications (including the Michigan Curriculum Framework) were combed for applicable science and social studies content standards, benchmarks and guidelines for each Project FLOW lesson.

During this process of evaluation and documentation, specific benchmarks and standards that were explicitly covered by a certain lesson were documented for two age levels: elementary (4-6 grade) and middle (6-8 grade) and the state and national standards/benchmarks. Publications used include the following:

  • Michigan Curriculum Framework

  • National Science Education Standards
National Academy of Sciences, 1996, National Academy Press, Washington, DC (ISBN 0-309-05326-9). See: Website
  • Benchmarks for Science Literacy, Project 2061
American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1993, Oxford University Press, Inc., New York, New York (ISBN 0-19-508986-3). See: Website
