Spotted Sandpiper

Actitis macularia

Habitat: Pebbly lakeshores, ponds, streamsides

  • During breeding season, the spotted sandpiper can be seen along the shores of small lakes and streams throughout central and northern United States, Alaska and Canada.
  • In summer, its spotted breast is distinctive. In fall and winter, its coloring is olive brown above with a white breast.
  • In flight, the spotted sandpiper has a stiff appearance, its wings beating in a shallow arc.
