Semipalmated Sandpiper

Calidris pusilla

Habitat: Great Lakes beaches.

  • The semipalmated sandpiper gets its name from its partially webbed feet.
  • It can often be seen in spring and fall along Great Lakes beaches, darting rapidly along the sand in search of insects and small crustaceans.
  • Collectively, sandpipers are often called “peeps.” The semipalmated sandpiper is one of the most numerous peeps in migration.
