Red-necked Grebe

Podiceps grisegena

Habitat: Great Lakes, ponds.

  • This large, loon-like grebe has a longer neck and bill than other grebes and a double white wing patch.
  • A fairly uncommon migrant to Michigan, these grebes depend on stopover sites to rest and refuel while going from wintering areas on the coasts of North America as far south as Long Island and Oregon to breeding grounds in Canada.
  • Red-necked Grebes dive under water to feed on fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects and some mollusks.
