Pied-billed Grebe

Podilymbus podiceps

Habitat: Ponds, lakes, marshes.

  • These small brown diving birds are similar to Horned grebes but without white wing patches, a more chicken-like bill and puffy white rump.
  • The Pied-billed Grebe breeds in Michigan but is rarely seen in flight because it prefers to escape predators by diving and usually migrates at night.
  • Like other grebe chicks, the young leave the nest soon after hatching and spend the first few weeks on the backs of their parents.
