Northern Pintail

Anas acuta

Habitat: Marshes, prairies, ponds, lakes, bays.

  • This dabbling duck feeds on the surface of the water with its tail and feet above water and head below.
  • Male pintails have a long needle-pointed tail and are gray with white on breast that continues up the neck into the dark head.
  • Females are similar in color to their mallard counterparts but with darker pointed tail, slender neck and blue-gray bill.
