Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Habitat: Fields, lawns, riverbanks, shores.

  • One of the earliest spring birds to arrive in the Great Lakes region. The killdeer is also one of the best-known species in the plover family.
  • Killdeer are brown with a white breast and two black breast bands. During breeding season, they nest on the ground in open fields, lawns or other gravelly areas, where eggs are well camouflaged.
  • When agitated, killdeers give a loud insistent call (killdee, killdee) and may fake a broken wing to distract potential predators from their nests.
