Horned Grebe

Podiceps auritus

Habitat: Lakes, ponds, coastal waters.

  • These duck-like diving birds have flat lobed (not webbed) toes, thin necks, white wing patches and appear tail-less.
  • Both sexes have golden ear tufts or “horns” and chestnut necks during the breeding season. In winter they are dark above, white below, with a black cap, white fore neck and thin straight bill.
  • Harsh sound of “kerra” or “aaarrrh,” squeaky trills during breeding, but usually silent during winter.
