Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Habitat: Coastal areas, rivers, large lakes.

  • National bird of the United States, the bald eagle is one of our most recognizable birds. Adults have a white head and white tail and striking yellow bill. Immature bald eagles have dark coloring with a dark bill.
  • With a 7-8 foot wingspan, the bald eagle is impressive in flight and holds its wings flat when soaring.
  • Breeding area (mostly Canada) also includes northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula and even parts of Southeast Michigan.
