American Coot

Fulica Americana

Habitat: Ponds and wetlands.

  • Similar in size to a duck, the coot is actually a rail. It has lobed feet, a slate gray body, and a whitish bill.
  • Coots move across water with a characteristic bobbing or pecking motion.
  • They are common throughout the Great Lakes region during summer. In winter, coots migrate to southern states and as far as Ecuador.
