With each season that passes, more data is collected in order to help scientists understand what is changing and how quickly. For more information on a global or local level, check out the following resources.

Michigan Sea Grant (MSG)

Regional

  • Healing Our Waters (HOW), Great Lakes Coalition – Consists of more than 100 national, state and local conservation organizations that came together to secure a sustainable restoration plan and to obtain the billions of dollars needed to implement it.
    The coalition published “Great Lakes Restoration and the Threat of Global Warming” in 2008, which addresses a variety of issues like how fluctuating lake levels could affect the Great Lakes area.

  • Great Lakes Regional Assessment Group (GLRAP) – A group of university faculty, researchers, technical consultants, students and industry collaborators from the region.

  • International Joint Commission (IJC) - Recent reports explore the risks, opportunities and responses of climate change and Great Lakes water quality, as well as significant implications for the Great Lakes region.

National/Worldwide

  • Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) – A science-based nonprofit working for a healthy environment and a safer world, the UCS uses independent scientific research to develop solutions and to secure changes in government policy, corporate practices, and consumer choices.

  • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - The IPCC provides the decision-makers and others interested in climate change with an objective source of information. In 2007, the panel released “Climate Change 2007: Synthesis Report,” the most recent installment in a series of IPCC Assessments that provide comprehensive scientific evidence regarding the state of the Earth's changing climate.

  • U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), U.S. Department of Agriculture - The CCSP integrates federal research efforts of 13 agencies on climate and global change. In 2008, the program produced: “The Effects of Climate Change on Agriculture, Land Resources, Water Resources, and Biodiversity." The report, coordinated by USDA, extensively examined climate impacts on U.S. ecosystems.
