VHS is a serious viral disease affecting more than 40 species of marine and freshwater fish in North America.
The North American strain of VHS virus is present in Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River.
Since spring 2005, VHS has been isolated and confirmed from a number of die-offs that have occurred in the Great Lakes region, including muskellunge, freshwater drum, round goby, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, gizzard shad and other fish species.
A U.S. Federal Order issued in 2006 seeks to prevent the spread of VHS into aquaculture facilities by restricting the interstate movement and importation of live fish of VHS-susceptible species.
Colorful illustrations, photos and graphics help 4th – 8th grade students understand why invasive species are a problem and what can be done.
