Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS)

  • VHS is a serious viral disease affecting more than 40 species of marine and freshwater fish in North America.
  • The North American strain of VHS virus is present in Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River.
  • Since spring 2005, VHS has been isolated and confirmed from a number of die-offs that have occurred in the Great Lakes region, including muskellunge, freshwater drum, round goby, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, gizzard shad and other fish species.
  • A U.S. Federal Order issued in 2006 seeks to prevent the spread of VHS into aquaculture facilities by restricting the interstate movement and importation of live fish of VHS-susceptible species.
