Discussing the Future of Michigan's Port Communities

Keeping it Clean
During a recent Clean Marina Program open house at MacRay Harbor in Harrison Township, U.S. Rep. Candice Miller emphasized the key role marinas can play in keeping our waterways clean. The open house was covered in the Port Huron Times Herald. Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast System
NOAA recently announced the launch of a harmful algal bloom forecast system and is testing it in Lake Erie. Harmful algal blooms, also called HABs, produce toxins that may pose a significant risk to human and animal health. Read full story

Michigan Sea Grant Educator Helping Solve Mystery of the Deep
Northwestern Michigan College leads the first effort to map the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay using sonar technology to distinguish sand bars, rocky shoals, fish habitat, logs, plant growth and sunken ships. Michigan Sea Grant’s Northwest Extension Educator Mark Breederland is helping the endeavor. A recent Traverse City Record Eagle news story covers the mapping and why it is significant. Said Breederland: "To be able to tell people about what's in our Great Lakes is wonderful. We've never before seen the lake bottom like this.”
It's the only Great Lakes locale where such high-resolution, water-mapping technology is being used. Officials hope it leads to more efforts to study the floors of North America's freshwater inland seas. See: Record Eagle Story

Bon Voyage: Teachers Embark on Lake Huron Exploration
Fifteen educators and several Great Lakes researchers ship off Saturday to study the science of Lake Huron aboard the 180 foot EPA research vessel Lake Guardian. The Lake Huron Shipboard and Shoreline Science workshop runs from July 25-31, beginning Saturday morning at Hart Plaza. The ship will leave at noon, traveling north through the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and Lake Huron ports of call throughout its journey. The educators will conduct research alongside scientists while learning about ecology and lake systems. Read full story

“Vacant Property” Earns Award
The clean design and easy-to-read graphics of Vacant Property Now and Tomorrow earned Michigan Sea Grant an Award of Excellence from the National Association of Government Communicators. The publication focuses on how Genesee County is working to turn vacant properties into economic and environmental assets – and how other communities can too. Great Lakes Fishery Workshops Planned Across the State
Wondering what the catch will be like this year? Curious about Cormorant control? Find some answers at this year’s Great Lakes fishery workshops. While the workshops are hosted annually, content is updated each year to reflect the current tide of fisheries in the Great Lakes. The workshops – perfect opportunities to network – provide information for the general public, anglers, charter captains and natural resources professionals. New this year is an additional workshop focused on the Straits area in Northeast Michigan.

Waterways Critical to Michigan's Economic Recovery
Lt. Governor John D. Cherry, Jr. and Michigan's Office of the Great Lakes unveiled the MI-Great Lakes Plan - a blueprint for the protection and restoration of the Great Lakes and Michigan waterways. The MI-Great Lakes Plan includes economic analysis by Michigan Sea Grant and the Brookings Institution, which estimates that recommended federal investments will yield tangible benefits to Michigan in the range of $7 to $13 billion.
