Content Expectations, Standards and Benchmarks
Relevant sections from educational publications were combed for applicable science and social studies content standards, benchmarks and guidelines for each FLOW lesson. All lesson content expectations and benchmarks have been combined with the lesson assessments in one document, separate from the Lessons, Activities and Materials/Procedures.

State of Michigan Content Expectations
Each FLOW lesson is aligned to relevant sections from the State of Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (specifically K 4-7) and the High School Content Expectations (primarily earth science and biology). The Michigan Department of Education developed Grade Level Content Expectations in response to the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). NCLB mandated that the state provide a set of comprehensive grade level assessments in science, as well as mathematics, English and language arts. According to the Michigan Department of Education, the “Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) are based on rigorous grade level content and are designed “to provide greater clarity for what students are expected to know and be able to do by the end of each grade.”

National Benchmarks/Standards
In addition to the State of Michigan Content Expectations, each FLOW lesson is aligned to relevant sections from the national benchmarks. During this process of evaluation and documentation, specific benchmarks and standards that were explicitly covered by a certain lesson were documented for two age levels: elementary (4-6 grade) and middle (6-8 grade).

Supporting Educators
FLOW materials are designed to support Michigan educators by:
- Aligning the FLOW curriculum to Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE) and National Benchmarks (see below).
- Standardizing key elements in each lesson (e.g., background, activity, and assessment) and ensuring that these elements clearly address the lesson objectives that are based on standards and benchmarks. For more information, see each lesson.
- Providing meaningful assessment tools that include the following components: learning objectives, student performance and recommended points. For more information, see the Assessment Overview.
