Fisheries Management
Management of Great Lakes fishery resources is the responsibility of the bordering states and province, tribal authorities, and federal agencies. Many stakeholder groups provide input into fishery management decisions. Great Lakes fishery resources are monitored by the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, a bi-national commission established in 1955 to help solve fishery problems and issues, as well as to coordinate research and management.
Working with the commission, fisheries managers from federal, state, provincial and tribal jurisdictions have established a committee for each lake. Lake committees
work on cooperative management strategies to establish and maintain the highest quality fishery resources possible. A council of lake committees works toward cooperative management for the entire Great Lakes Basin.
