Sport Fishery

Management of species such as salmon has greatly increased the success of the sport and charter fisheries in the Great Lakes. Government surveys indicate that the U.S. waters of lakes Erie and Michigan are most popular for sport fishing measured by the number of anglers and angling effort (number of days fishing). Lake Huron takes the lead in Canadian waters, followed closely in effort by lakes Erie and Ontario. Popular sport species include walleye and sauger, yellow perch, salmon, largemouth and smallmouth bass, lake trout, rainbow trout, northern pike, pickerel, muskellunge and other trout.
