Land Use Programs

Planning for Water Quality
“Planning for Water Quality” is an educational module developed and taught by Michigan Sea Grant Extension Educators. Specially designed for decision makers in coastal communities, the module covers the basics of water resource science; links between land use and water resource management; and practical ideas for water quality protection by local government.

It was developed as part of the Citizen Planner program, a course series in land use planning sponsored by Michigan State University Extension. The program is designed for citizens appointed to serve on local land use planning boards and commissions. A primary goal of the program is to equip community leaders and interested citizens with the technical knowledge, understanding of the legal framework of planning and zoning, and leadership skills to perform their duties more effectively. Sea Grant Extension Educators teach several Citizen Planner modules.

Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO)
The National NEMO Network is a network of education programs teaching local land use decision makers about the relationship between land use and natural resource protection. In Michigan, Sea Grant Extension Educators teach NEMO concepts in several of the Citizen Planner sessions mentioned above. The NEMO program introduces the issue of nonpoint source pollution to local officials and gives them tools for improving water quality and planning development.

Stop the Mudness
Did you know that dirt is the #1 pollutant, by volume, in our waters? The Great Lakes Basin Program for Soil Erosion and Sediment Control launched this unique public outreach campaign to improve basinwide publicity on the damages caused by sediment. The site includes background information, checklists and a basic publicity/ communications toolkit for use by local organizations to spread the word about this growing problem.
